Some of my photographs from Abbi and Will’s beautiful Palácio do Grilo wedding in Lisbon, Portugal have just been published in British Vogue, in an article about Etsy wedding dresses.
The article, “Shopping For My Wedding Dress Gave Me Anxiety. So I Designed It Myself”, tells the story of Abbi’s search for a wedding dress that felt completely like her. After feeling overwhelmed by the traditional wedding dress shopping experience, she discovered Shindig Threads on Etsy and eventually worked with designer Kat to create a completely custom gown.
The result was everything but traditional: a full skirt, a basque waist, colourful three-dimensional flowers and a long lace bow cascading down the train. As Abbi puts it, the dress was “extra, but it was also entirely me.” And I think that captures the spirit of the whole day beautifully. Read the full story in British Vogue
The wedding took place at Palácio do Grilo, one of Lisbon’s most extraordinary historic and alternative venues, and I had the absolute pleasure of documenting it.
There’s something particularly surreal about seeing these photographs in a magazine I’ve admired for so long. And even more special knowing that these are photographs from a real wedding, with real people, real emotions, movement, imperfections and all the little in-between moments that made the day theirs.
My approach to wedding photography sits somewhere between documentary photography and editorial photography. I love observing what happens naturally, while also paying attention to composition, light, fashion and all the visual details that make each wedding unique. Whether I’m photographing a Lisbon wedding, a destination wedding in Portugal or a celebration in Italy, I want the photographs to feel honest, atmospheric and unmistakably yours.
And this is also why I love working with both digital and film photography. Film brings a particular softness, texture and sense of nostalgia to a wedding gallery, while documentary photography allows me to preserve the moments that could never be staged.
So yes, seeing my work published in Vogue feels pretty surreal. 🥹
But what makes this one especially meaningful is that these photographs are part of Abbi and Will’s actual story: their wedding, their people, their emotions, and a dress that was created to feel completely like Abbi.
I’m so grateful I got to be there to document it.
Thank you, Abbi and Will, for trusting me with your story. 🤍
